"Kitang kita naman na kaya natin sila, it would just all boil down on your desire to win."
These were Coach Pido’s words for his Tigers, but I guess it wasn’t enough. UST dealt with its fifth straight loss, 67-76, last Saturday during their game against the FEU Tamaraws. It was a tight ball game for the first 30 minutes with UST not letting FEU get away with a big lead, until FEU eventually pulled away in the fourth quarter courtesy of their fourth quarter man RR Garcia with the help of rookie Terence Romeo. The biggest lead FEU could register during the first three quarters was at 7 points, before registering a 71-57 lead in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter.
The lead was cut down to eight courtesy of back to back three pointers from Jeric Fortuna and Clark Bautista, while adding a Jeric Teng drive to the basket cut the lead further with less than a minute to go, 71-65. Fortuna fouled Jens Knuttel with 50 seconds to go, while the latter split his free throws giving UST still a chance in the ball game. A quick three by Clark Bautista didn’t go in but a foul by Bryan Cruz gave UST the extra possession. Fortuna inbounded the ball to Teng finishing with a quick two, giving FEU only a 5 point lead. Fortuna fouled Romeo, and the rookie gave FEU a 6 point advantage after splitting his charities. With only 30 seconds remaining in the clock, and UST having ball possession, a bad pass caused the turnover giving FEU back the possession, and that pretty much did it for them.

Yes, it could have been UST’s ball game, but it was FEU’s day. FEU went up 9-1 in the standings while UST dropped to 3-7, making their bid for the final four tougher to accomplish. If they do still have a chance in the final four, I’m thinking that it’s very slim, and it will depend on how their next games turn out, as well as NU, UE, and especially Lasalle’s games. All in all, even if they don’t make it to the final four, they’ve played great games during the whole season. There have been a lot of learning experiences, and there were a lot of could have’s. But the most important thing is that they have proved something to their critics.
They have proved that even with the absence of key players Dylan Ababou and Khasim Mirza, the Tigers can still survive their battles. It was a lot harder compared to last season, but they were still able to do something about it. Yes, they could have done better, but they never gave up even if others were already giving up on them. They are still a young team indeed, a team with lots of rooms for improvement, a team with players with not enough experiences in the league, and a team that, once they got their game going, could be lethal. There are still 4 games left in UST’s schedule, and the most that they can do about it is to never give up and play with all their heart. Go USTe!
